HJFMRI in Tanzania

HJFMRI Tanzania has worked in-country since 2004 to implement global health improvement programs and support clinical and laboratory research. In collaboration with the U.S. military, HJFMRI has developed longstanding partnerships with Tanzanian national, regional and military health departments and nonprofit organizations to provide prevention, care, and treatment services for people affected by HIV. HJFMRI research support in Tanzania spans research activities ranging from disease surveillance to vaccine and drug clinical trials.

Research

HJFMRI Tanzania supports the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in conducting medical research with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) - Mbeya Medical Research Center (MMRC), one of Tanzania’s most active research centers. During the 20+ years of this partnership, HJFMRI has supported vaccine and therapeutics research to address HIV, Ebola, and TB, among other challenges.

Surveillance

Since 2010, HJFMRI has partnered with the U.S. Army Medical Research Directorate-Africa to implement infectious disease surveillance and outbreak response activities in sub-Saharan Africa. HJFMRI works with the Tanzania People’s Defence Force at medical sites throughout the mainland and Zanzibar to conduct influenza surveillance.
