Flu Surveillance in Kenya

HJFMRI has received a series of awards from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for influenza surveillance work in Kenya.

HJFMRI has been supporting surveillance and clinical research on infectious diseases in Kenya since 2004 with a focus on increasing host country capacity, promoting country ownership and developing sustainable research platforms. HJFMRI collaborates with the Kenya Ministry of Health (MOH) and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and other in-country partners to conduct avian and pandemic influenza surveillance and response activities under CDC guidelines. HJFMRI support includes training on epidemiological and virologic surveillance, laboratory capacity building, and outbreak investigations and response.

The goal of this surveillance system is to better identify novel and emerging influenza viruses in both humans and animals to guide decisions on vaccine formulation and inform public health and preparedness response.
