Daniel Ochiel, Ph.D.

Director of Research-Africa

Dr. Ochiel provides technical guidance, leads the development of forward-looking priorities, and identifying and responding to opportunities to broaden HJFMRI’s research portfolio throughout Africa. He overseas HJFMRI’s broader research efforts on the continent, serving as a principal investigator and mentoring both HJFMRI and collaborating researchers and study teams.  

He is a strategic leader in infectious disease research who has led complex cross-functional, high performing teams with his close supervision and mentorship of research scientists, engagement of diverse global and regional partners, and expertise on securing competitive funding designed to address key health priorities impacting Africa. He is internationally trained with over 20 years of experience in the fields of molecular immunology and virology, vaccine R&D and clinical trials. He is a recipient of several national and international awards and grants/fellowships to conduct research and research capacity strengthening in several African countries.

He holds a PhD from Dartmouth College and Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the T.H Chan Harvard School of Public Health.
