HJFMRI has a longstanding relationship with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), which is based in Nairobi and performs significant biomedical research and population-based surveillance of emerging infectious disease. KEMRI offers world-class expertise with local knowledge of culture, language, and regulatory and legal requirements in a variety of settings from crowded urban neighborhoods to remote villages.

In addition to Nairobi, KEMRI also have research labs in Kisumu West (Kombewa) and Kericho. The Kericho Clinical Research Center’s lab, staffed jointly by HJFMRI and KEMRI, was the first in Kenya to be accredited by the College of American Pathologists.

HJFMRI collaborates with KEMRI staff on biomedical research and population-based surveillance of emerging infectious disease. Twelve active surveillance sites, which are located across several regions, focus on a broad range of Kenyan tribes, cultures and environments.
